It is a well known fact that the people of Winston Salem never do thines in a half way style. Whatever is under taken is well done or not done at all, and in the preparations that are being made to care for and entertain the two thousand and more old soldiers that are expect ed to attend this reunion, every thing possible is being done to make our ever welcome visitors comfortable and happy. It will be remembered that Winston-Salem entertained the Veterans four years ago, and the boys went home delighted with their reception and entertain ment. The invitation .to again visit Winston-Salem was extend ed in that spirit of loyalty to the Veterans which has ever Chirac terizd the people, and now that the invitation has been accepted Asrainst this grasping com bination the power of the Feder al Government, under the Inter state Commerce act, is Inow for the first time to be employed for the protection of the public. For twenty years since the rail roads became subject to the act the express companies, and to that extent the railroads which in large measure shared the ex press companies' receipts on a Dercentage basis or actually con trolled them, have escaped reg ulation. Double collection of lawful charges; overcharges and un dercharges resulting in dis crimination between shippers and the granting of rebates ; ob scure and unreasonable rates; slow service through arbitrary routing by indirect lines; con fusing and unfair classification of matter ; delays in settling claims for loss and damage 'and excessive insurance charges were found to prevail so gener ally that the commission pro poses revolutionary reforms. Without interfering with the re ations of the express companies and the railroads, it has under taken to reconstruct the busi ness and to create a national system of rates, classification and routing f the express interests had ever shown any inclination to correct their methods or to meet the public half way in a spirit of fairness, instead of relying upon their political influence to Drevent legislation they might be entitled to a certain amount of sympathy because of the sev ere treatment to which they are about to be subjected. and marching orders have been issued, the boys of '61 will be received with open arms and glad hearts by men, women nd children. Committees are at work pre paring comfortable sleeping quarters, as well as places where good things to eat and drink may be found in abundance. There will be something doing all the time. Addresses by distinguish ed Confederate Veterans will be a feature of the convention. The program will be interesting from start to finish. Reduced rates on the railroads as usual have been applied for, and the exact fare can be learn ed from any station by enquiring of the Leal agent, This i6 no formal invitation which Winston-Salem extends to the leaves of a fast thinning line. It is a hearty and sincere expresion of the love and admi ration that we have for brave men who knew no fear in the days that tried men's souls. We consider ourselves fortunate and honored in having you among us.
